Psalm 4: Movements I-IV (Demo)

I give myself a grade of 'F' in the sleep department. I've always been that way– whether it be excitement, worry, diet or sacrifice at the altar of Netflix. I began writing this song at movement IV as a lullaby for myself, using King David's lyrics in Psalm 4 (KJV).

Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.

Psalm 4:7-8

We're all prone to be desiring increase in our lives. Increase may look different for each person– for many it's monetary or material, but for others, it may be time, fame, happiness or even plain ol' fun and recreation. For me, it's too often the monetary and material things and I shamefully put my trust in them to sustain me.

King David was a man after God's heart (1 Samuel 13:14) and he knew at God's right hand is fullness of joy and gladness (Psalm 16:11; Colossians 3:1-4). I often times need to recalibrate my heart at night to be focused on things above. This song was written for that purpose.

As you listen to it, I encourage you to pay attention to the question God is asking mankind. He often asks us questions and rarely do we take the time to meditate on them or properly respond.

O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah.

Psalm 4:2
